Haddon Hall

Its roots go back to the 12th century and are even noted in the Domesday Book, with the house expanding over five centuries under the Vernons and later the Manners family, the Dukes of Rutland. Local legend recalls how Dorothy Vernon famously eloped from a ball here in 1563 with her love, John Manners.

After the Dukes moved to Belvoir Castle, Haddon remained mostly unchanged for two hundred years, saving it from modern updates and keeping it remarkably intact. In the 1900s, the 9th Duke focused his efforts on restoring the estate.
