Battle of Britain Memorial
Located on the white cliffs between Folkestone and Dover, the Battle of Britain Memorial honours the RAF crews of 1940. Key draws include a massive propeller carved into the landscape, full-size Spitfire and Hurricane replicas, and the Scramble Experience. A memorial wall lists nearly 3,000 names, all set against vast coastal views.
Perched on the white cliffs of Capel-le-Ferne between Folkestone and Dover, the Battle of Britain Memorial sits in a poignant spot overlooking the very skies where the fight for Britain took place in 1940. Opened by the Queen Mother in 1993, it honors 'the Few'—the RAF crews who defended the country during that critical summer. At its heart is a massive propeller shape carved into the landscape, with a sculpture of a young pilot looking out toward the sea.
Visitors can walk beside full-size replicas of a Spitfire and a Hawker Hurricane, or pay their respects at the Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall, which lists nearly 3,000 names. The visitor centre, aptly called The Wing for its Spitfire-inspired shape, features the Scramble Experience, using sound and visuals to recreate the tension felt by the pilots. The clifftop location and vast coastal views make the entire experience deeply reflective.
