For centuries, it functioned as both a courthouse and a jail, remaining an active prison until 2011, making it one of the longest-running in the UK. Its darkest moment arrived in 1612 with the trial of the Pendle witches, most of whom were executed in one of the most famous witch trials in English history.

Visitors can now explore the castle through guided tours that dive into its dramatic legacy, visiting the massive gatehouse, the Shire Hall with its heraldic shields, the courtroom, and the bleak dungeons. Located near Accrington in Lancashire, Oswaldtwistle Mills is a shopping and visitor destination set in a former cotton weaving mill. Looms clattered across the site from the 1820s for over 150 years, until the decline of the British textile industry finally brought things to a halt in the early 90s. Instead of letting the historic building go to waste, it was transformed in 1994 into one of Lancashire's first mill shopping villages.

Nowadays, the vast complex houses dozens of stores, ranging from fashion and gifts to a large garden and home centre, along with a deli, restaurants, and cafés. Tucked away among the shops is a heritage museum that keeps the mill's history alive, with exhibits showcasing the hard work of those who operated the looms and spinning frames. A favorite for coach trips, it's an easy, all-weather day out that blends shopping and dining with a look back at local industrial roots.
