Great Yarmouth Hippodrome
The Great Yarmouth Hippodrome is a purpose-built circus in Norfolk and the only complete venue of its kind remaining in the UK. It is best known for its unique circus ring that sinks to reveal a water tank, allowing performers to dive into a flooded arena for spectacular aquatic finales. Seasonal shows feature acrobats, clowns, and daredevils.
The Great Yarmouth Hippodrome is a rare gem of British seaside history, a purpose-built circus dating back to 1903. Created by showman George Gilbert and designed by Ralph Scott Cockrill, it stands as the only complete circus of its kind left in the UK. Its most impressive feature is hidden beneath the ornate interior: a circus ring that can sink to reveal a water tank, enabling the spectacular aquatic finales that have wowed crowds for over a hundred years.
Saved and restored in the late twentieth century by the Jay family, who still run the venue today, the Hippodrome blends traditional circus acts with a modern touch. Guests sit close to the action, watching acrobats, clowns, and daredevils before the famous water spectacular closes the show with rising fountains and performers diving into the flooded arena. Shows run during Easter, throughout the summer, and across the Halloween and Christmas seasons.
