Located in a wooded valley on Dorset's Jurassic Coast, Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens are a lush escape featuring exotic plants. Tucked away in a wooded valley near the sea on Dorset's Jurassic Coast, Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens are a lush, unexpected escape filled with exotic plants. The gardens date back to 1765, when Elizabeth, the 1st Countess of Ilchester, created them as a kitchen garden for her nearby summer home. That walled garden remains the center of the estate, which grew significantly over the years as the Fox-Strangways family—many of whom were passionate botanists and travelers—brought back rare species from across the globe.

Spanning about twenty acres and holding a Grade I listing, the gardens benefit from a mild microclimate where subtropical plants like towering tree ferns, palms, magnolias, and camellias truly thrive.
