Castle of Mey
Located on the rugged Caithness coast, the Castle of Mey is the most northerly inhabited castle on the British mainland. Visitors can explore the rooms preserved by the Queen Mother, who restored the building as her Highland getaway. The site also features a thriving walled garden, an animal center, and sprawling grounds overlooking the Pentland Firth.
Perched on the rugged coast of Caithness, the Castle of Mey looks out over the Pentland Firth toward the Orkney Islands. Originally built by the Sinclair Earls of Caithness as Barrogill Castle, this 16th-century tower house found a second life in 1952. After being widowed, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother discovered the derelict building and spent years restoring it, returning it to its original name of Mey. It became her favorite Highland getaway, where she returned every summer.
As the most northerly inhabited castle on the British mainland, it now welcomes visitors who can explore rooms preserved just as the Queen Mother left them. Outside, her walled garden continues to thrive despite the harsh coastal winds, complemented by an animal center and sprawling grounds. Between its secluded location and royal history, the castle feels remarkably warm and inviting.
