Holker Hall

Holker Hall

Holker Hall is a Victorian mansion on the Cartmel peninsula in southern Cumbria. Visitors are drawn to its lavish interiors and award-winning gardens, which feature formal terraces, a cascade, a sunken garden, and rare trees. The estate also offers a deer park, food hall, and café, all set against a backdrop of the Lakeland fells.

Perched on the Cartmel peninsula in southern Cumbria near Morecambe Bay, Holker Hall has been the beloved home of the Cavendish family for generations. While a house originally stood here in the sixteenth century, a devastating fire in 1871 wiped out the west wing. The 7th Duke of Devonshire decided to rebuild on a larger scale using warm red sandstone, hiring the famous Lancaster architects Paley and Austin to design the impressive Victorian mansion that stands today.

Although the lavish interiors are well worth a look, Holker is best known for its award-winning gardens. Roughly 25 acres of land mix formal terraces with wild woodland, complete with a cascade, fountain, sunken garden, and rare trees—including a lime tree thought to be centuries old. Visitors can stroll through the grounds, explore the deer park, or stop by the food hall and café. With the Lakeland fells rising in the distance, it's a peaceful and elegant spot for a day trip.
