Hexham
Hexham is a historic Northumberland market town on the River Tyne, home to a 7th-century abbey and England's first purpose-built prison, and a handy base for exploring Hadrian's Wall.
Trade the stress of driving for a bit of daydreaming and let us handle the journey to Hexham for you. This charming market town is nestled in the Tyne Valley, just 25 miles west of Newcastle, where honey-coloured stone buildings and cobbled streets wrap around a lively market square. Sitting right on the banks of the River Tyne, Hexham manages to pack over 1,300 years of history into a lovely, walkable centre.
It’s the perfect spot to simply potter around at your own pace, coffee in hand, with all the best sights just a short stroll away. There is plenty to keep you busy, too. You could start at Hexham Abbey, founded way back in 674 AD, and venture down into its atmospheric Saxon crypt, built from stone left behind by the Romans. Nearby, Hexham Old Gaol holds the title of England's first purpose-built prison—you can even try the stocks if you're feeling brave. For something a little more relaxed, you can explore the Victorian Queen's Hall Arts Centre or enjoy a peaceful wander along the riverside at Tyne Green.
