Chesters Roman Fort

Chesters Roman Fort

Chesters is a Roman cavalry fort in a valley near Hexham, Northumberland. Visitors can explore the headquarters and a riverbank bathhouse featuring an original underfloor heating system. The site also includes the Clayton Museum, which houses a collection of Roman sculptures and altars.

Nestled in a peaceful valley near Hexham in Northumberland, Chesters is the most complete Roman cavalry fort left in Britain. For over two hundred years, it served as a base for about 500 mounted troops guarding the edge of the empire. Much of what you can see today is thanks to the Victorian antiquarian John Clayton, whose meticulous excavations in the nineteenth century saved the site for us.

Now managed by English Heritage, the fort allows visitors to walk through its four main gateways and explore the headquarters and the commanding officer's residence. The real standout is the riverbank bathhouse, where you can still see the sequence of heated rooms and the original underfloor heating system. Nearby, the atmospheric Clayton Museum has kept its original 1896 layout, housing a fantastic collection of Roman altars and sculptures that bring the reality of frontier life to life.
