Established in the 1780s, it once became one of the largest cotton-spinning hubs on earth. It is most famous for the social reformer Robert Owen, who ran the mills in the early 1800s and transformed the village into a model community by offering quality housing, healthcare, education, and the first-ever workplace nursery. Because of its historical importance, UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site in 2001.
