West Somerset Railway

The West Somerset Railway is England's longest standard gauge heritage line, running from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead. Visitors can travel by steam and diesel locomotives through the scenic Quantock Hills and along the Bristol Channel. As the longest standard gauge heritage line in England, the West Somerset Railway stretches about twenty miles from Bishops Lydeard near Taunton to the coast at Minehead. The line originally opened in stages between 1862 and 1874, but it eventually closed in 1973. Since the mid-70s, enthusiasts have worked to reopen it piece by piece, and it now carries passengers through the scenic Quantock Hills and along the Bristol Channel.

Steam and diesel locomotives pull trains into a series of beautifully restored stations, each with its own unique feel and plenty of spots to stop and explore. In Bishops Lydeard, the Gauge Museum is set in an 1862 goods shed and features signalling gear and interactive exhibits, while Blue Anchor provides more railway history alongside great coastal views.
